Healthcare Moves: A Monthly Summary of Hires and Layoffs

Here is a selection of recent executive hires, exits, promotions and layoffs occurring across the healthcare industry.

Hires

Amwell welcomed Kathy Weiler as chief commercial and growth officer. She comes to the telehealth company from Optum, where she served as chief consumer officer.

Artera, a healthcare SaaS company that focuses on patient communication, expanded its executive team. It added three vice presidents — Karri Alexion-Tiernan joined as vice president of product marketing, Joanne Chen joined as vice president of data, and Mark Thomson joined as vice president of customer success.

Athenahealth named George Hamilton as its new chief corporate strategy and development officer. Most recently, he served as vice president of strategy and business development at UnitedHealth Group. Prior to UnitedHealth, Hamilton was a founding partner and managing director at Intermountain Ventures and vice president of strategy and business development for Intermountain Healthcare.

Shannon Susko recently became Centene’s new chief communications officer. She came to the insurer from Edelman Smithfield, which is part of the Edelman public relations firm.

CommonSpirit Health will soon welcome Sheri Shapiro as its new chief strategy officer. She comes to CommonSpirit from Trinity Health, where she held the same title. 

Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare appointed Joon Sup Lee as its new CEO. He is currently executive vice president at UPMC and president of UPMC Physician Services. Lee, who is an interventional cardiologist by training, is leaving UPMC after nearly 27 years there.

Venture capital firm Matrix Partners hired TJ Parker as a general partner. Parker is the co-founder and former CEO of PillPack, which was acquired by Amazon in 2018.

Particle Health, a healthcare interoperability platform, welcomed Jason Prestinario as CEO. He comes to the company from Komodo Health, a healthcare data platform. 

UNC Health recently welcomed William Bryant as its new CFO. Bryant first joined the health system in 2016, and he went on to hold various financial leadership roles. He briefly left UNC Health last year to serve as CFO of dermatology provider Qualderm Partners.

Promotions

Bright Health Group promoted Jay Matushak to the role of CFO. He joined the company in 2021, most recently serving as senior vice president of finance. Before joining Bright Health, he spent six years as CFO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota and 15 years at UnitedHealth Group.

Exits

AHIP’s president and CEO, Matt Eyles, is resigning from his position. The trade association, which represents the health insurance industry, said it plans to conduct a national search for its next leader. 

Centene is beginning to look for a replacement for COO James Murray, who will be retiring in 2024. 

CommonSpirit Health recently announced that its president and COO, Marvin O’Quinn, will be retiring in August.

University Hospitals, a 21-hospital health system based in Cleveland, is preparing for CFO Michael Szubski’s retirement. He is planning to retire after 15 years in the role. 

Layoffs

Amazon let go of an undisclosed number of employees when it recently shuttered its Halo wearables division.

Brightline, a company focused on pediatric mental health, announced a round of layoffs, cutting 20% of its workforce for the second time in six months.

Calibrate, a telehealth startup focused on weight loss, recently eliminated 18% of its workforce. The company already laid off 24% of its workforce last summer.

Cue Health, a company offering telehealth and at-home diagnostics, laid off 30% of its workforce, which is about 326 employees.

Mississippi-based Memorial Health System eliminated nearly 90 roles, which is less than 2% of the health system’s workforce. Most of the positions that were cut did not involve direct patient care. 

Monument Health, a health system based in South Dakota, laid off about 2% of its workforce. The eliminated jobs were corporate and did not involve patient care. The health system also said it plans to reduce executive pay by 20%.

Nuance, which Microsoft acquired last year for nearly $20 billion, recently imposed a round of layoffs. The company did not disclose the number of affected employees.

Oracle laid off about 3,000 Cerner employees. These job eliminations affected roles in departments such as marketing, engineering, accounting, legal and product.

San Diego-based health system Scripps Health eliminated 70 administrative roles, WARN documents revealed. The job cuts affected corporate positions and did not impact any patient care staff.

PeaceHealth, a health system based in Washington state, recently cut 251 caregiver roles.

Walgreens recently reduced its corporate workforce by 10%. The round of layoffs affected 504 employees.
