The average monthly plan premium for Medicare Advantage is expected to increase only slightly in 2024 from 2023, CMS said. About 73% of beneficiaries will see no increase at all.

ACA Marketplace insurers are proposing an average 6% premium hike for 2024, with inflation being a driving factor, according to an analysis by KFF.

The average total monthly premium for Medicare Part D coverage is expected to be $55.50 in 2024, down from $56.49 in 2023, according to CMS.

In 2023’s enrollment period, 84% of eHealth customers chose an MA plan with a $0 monthly premium, versus 87% in 2022, eHealth’s annual Medicare Index Report found. This is the first time popularity in $0 premium plans has decreased since eHealth started conducting the report in 2018, when 63% of customers selected a no-premium plan.

The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans increased to $7 in the first half of the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment period this year, the eHealth report found. Premiums were in the $4 to $5 range for the last three years.

CMS cited rising drug costs and the Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for the premium increases, which will rise to $170 in 2022 for people who make $91,000 or less. 

CMS is lowering the average premium for MA plans to $19 per month in 2022 from about $21 this year. The news comes as several insurers announce new MA plan offerings for 2022, including Humana, which said it will launch 72 plans.
